Drug Crimes in Charlotte

With the booming growth and population explosion in the Charlotte-Metro towns like Monroe, Mooresville, Statesville, Salisbury, and Gastonia, our criminal court system is inundated with cases from minor misdemeanor charges like simple possession and possession of drug paraphernalia, all the way to Level III Drug Trafficking charges.

Drug offenses are some of the most common crimes and arrests in Charlotte NC. They often involve confidential or sensitive information. If you have a drug related crime, we'd like to help you.

The Powers Law Firm, P.A. provides legal advice and guidance on the best way to approach and handle controlled substance charges. Drug offenses can be very serious, especially if they involve felony accusations like:

  • Drug Trafficking - Drug Trade Charges
  • Felony Possession of Controlled Substances
  • PWISD Possession with Intent to Sell or Deliver
  • Felony Manufacture of Controlled Substance
  • Felony Maintaining a Dwelling

Even for more minor, misdemeanor possession charges like simple possession of marijuana and possession of drug paraphernalia can have consequences to your future.

What is an Indictment?

Do I Need a Lawyer for Drug Charges?

Other than a speeding ticket or some other traffic citation, many clients have never needed to call an attorney's office. As such, you may not know how to establish an attorney client relationship.

That's OK.

Whether a felony or misdemeanor, if you stand accused of a drug crime in Charlotte, we think it's a good idea to get advice from an experienced criminal defense lawyer who knows how the system works.

"We think it's a good idea to have someone you can trust standing with you, shoulder-to-shoulder in court, looking out for you and your best interests."

What Happens if You Were Arrested?

First and foremost, if you were arrested by Charlotte Mecklenburg Police and processed at the Mecklenburg County Jail, there is a good chance your picture and name are online and accessible by friends, family, and even your employer.

Is My Arrest Online?

At our law office, protecting your liberty and your future is very important to us.

Just allegations of possession of illegal drugs can affect your job, your reputation in the community, and your well-being. Being accused of a crime is not the same thing as being found guilty.

Make no mistake, certain criminal charges in NC, like violent crime, can have long-term consequences and can lead to prison time if you’re convicted.

How Much Does It Cost to Hire a Lawyer?

A lot depends on the severity of the charges, the evidence against you, and your prior history of convictions. As you might understand trafficking heroin or methamphetamine is a bigger legal fee.

Our attorney's office provides a free consultation for criminal charges. We also offer payment plans and financing options when able. Once we know the facts of your case, we can provide an estimate of fees and help explain what it will cost to retain a lawyer to represent you in court.

How Does an Attorney Help?

Defense attorneys investigate your criminal charges, prepare a personalized defense strategy, file motions to dismiss and motions to suppress (when legally appropriate), advise you of the risk involved with taking your case at trial.

We do more than argue cases in court. We regularly point clients in the right direction to get substance abuse treatment and counseling.

"We represent good people who sometimes make bad mistakes in life. Our goal is to provide legal advice you can trust while being kind and considerate."

Is Possession of Marijuana a Felony or Misdemeanor?

Minor possession of marijuana in NC is ordinarily a misdemeanor. There are instances when possession of large amounts of marijuana and other drugs may be classified as a felony. PWISD marijuana (with intent to sell or deliver) is a felony. Trafficking Marijuana is also a felony offense.

Certain matters may also include allegations of related violent crime like felony assault, robbery, and AWDW inflicting serious injury and weapons charges.

What Kind of Cases Do You Handle?

Our law office handles cases brought by the State of North Carolina. They may involve any of the controlled substances (drugs) in North Carolina like:

  • Heroin - Opiates
  • Cocaine
  • Marijuana
  • Ecstacy
  • LSD
  • MDA and MDMA
  • Methamphetamines
Will I Be Convicted?

Drug cases are complicated and the State carries the Burden of Proof.

You should not assume a conviction is automatic or that there is no hope. It's also important to understand that just because you have a clean record does not mean you're entitled to automatic dismissal.

Our goal is to avoid a conviction, if possible. We will guide you through the process, review the facts of your case, and provide the legal advice you can trust about the crime.

If you have been indicted with a felony and received a “true bill” from a grand jury, that can be pretty stressful.

Don't carry that burden alone. We think it's a good idea to lawyer up immediately, even before charges are brought by law enforcement if possible, and have someone looking out for you and your best interests.

Preparation, hard work, and real-world trial experience are critically important tools in preparing a defense to your charges.

We offer a FREE initial lawyer consultation and payment plans when able.

Bill Powers and his firm were a true blessing. If anyone is contacting an attorney, it's more than likely not from a positive life experience. If there was a rating for "bedside manner" for lawyers he'd get a 10/10 for that as well. The entire staff were helpful... K.C.

Bill and his staff are flat out great. I (unfortunately) was a repeat customer after a string of tickets. These guys not only took care of the initial ticket for me, but went the extra mile and reduced my problems from 3 to just 1 (very minor one) on the same day I called back! I would recommend them to anyone. A.R.
