A Public Defender who works at the Moss Justice Center in York County, South Carolina has tested positive for SARS-CoV-2 Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome Coronavirus 2.
The Justice Center is where criminal charges in York County, which includes Rock Hill, Fort Mill, and Lake Wylie, are heard.
Other court personnel work in the Moss Center, including the Office of the Public Defender, 16th District Solicitors (prosecutors) for the State of South Carolina, Magistrates, and the Clerk of Court for York County.
Adjacent to the Moss Center is the York County Jail and the York Sheriff’s Department Office.
The York County jail houses approximately 300 “in-custody” inmates.
Criminal court matters, which include DUI charges in York County and other criminal cases before the Court are to be postponed and/or handled by video conferences.
The 16th Circuit Solicitor’s Office and the Public Defender’s Office locations will be closed to the public through the remainder of the week of June 22, 2020.

Grand Jury Term Cancelled
The Grand Jury term, as scheduled for Thursday, June 25, 2020, has been canceled.
At the present time, a decision has not been made whether the court closure will extend into the week of June 29, 2020.
Clerk of Court’s Office Remains Open
The Clerk of Court’s Office in York County, which handles the filing of court materials, payments, and other administrative matters will remain open.
Furthermore, the York County Magistrates’ Offices will also remain open. Magistrates in South Carolina handle many lower-level cases and are vital to the timely disposition of matters.

Jury Trials in South Carolina
The South Carolina Supreme Court postponed all trials during the Coronavirus pandemic.
As such, there have not been jury trials held at the York County courthouse since March 2020.
The Court continues to hear certain matters in-person, limiting access to courtrooms.

The York County Detention Center is part of the Sheriff’s Office.
As part of the Moss Justice Center, it is a “direct supervision” detention facility with approximately 565 beds for inmates.
The Sheriff’s Department holds inmates arrested by law enforcement officers in York County. The Detention Center also houses inmates held by the Immigration and Customs Enforcement (I.C.E.), as well as the United States Marshal Service.
