Melissa supports the staff attorneys in the criminal defense and family law practice groups at Powers Law Firm PA. She also manages the firm support staff and vendors.

Before re-joining the firm in 2018, Melissa served as a legal assistant for property law / residential real estate “closing” firms in Charlotte, North Carolina. She also has substantial customer service and sales experience with other, non-law-related businesses.

Wanting a career-change from sales and customer service, I began working as a receptionist at the Powers Law Firm in 2006. I started fresh. Working for Bill has been an incredible opportunity. It literally changed my life and what I do to support my family.

During the interview process he told me, ‘The practice of law is exciting, if not thrilling at times. There is nothing more rewarding than helping people when they’re going through tough times.’

That is absolutely true. I love helping people. It’s part of who I am and my nature. I relate to clients, knowing how much they rely on us.

Melissa began as the firm receptionist and has consistently increased her responsibilities at the Powers Law Firm, serving at times as New Client Coordinator, Out-of-County Traffic Ticket Assistant, and Staff Legal Assistant/Office Manager.

Melissa left the firm in 2008 to have children. After eight years as a stay-at-home mom, she returned to the legal field, working with other law firms, trying her hand as a Real Estate Paralegal.

It just wasn’t the same. While I liked everyone at other firms, nothing ‘fit’ until a position opened-up at the Powers Law Firm in early 2018. Litigation is what I love.

I jumped at the opportunity to again work with Bill Powers. I know that’s where I am supposed to be.

I have tried to promote and sell many things in my life. The only thing I have ever been good at ‘selling’ is Bill Powers and what he does to help people in times of need. It’s easy to do because I believe in what we do. I believe in the firm values and mission to help people.

I know Bill will do and does do what he says.

He is a man of candor, honesty, and kindness. He loves helping people, just like me. He treats everyone he meets with dignity, respect, and courtesy. I’ve seen him at work in court. He’s a respected attorney for a reason. He makes a difference in people’s lives.

What we do to help people is not always easy. We see people at the end of their rope, often scared to death about what’s going on in life.

I’ve seen Bill Powers and our other attorneys at work under pressure. Criminal defense and family law matters can be extremely complex, confusing, and obviously have consequences.

I know their strengths and weaknesses. Our team works well together because those respective personalities and strengths. Bill has carefully selected the firm staff, considering things like our personality types, training, and life experiences.

More than anything, I know our law firm is centered on helping people and less about turning a profit. Yes, we need to make a living. But first-and-foremost we are dedicated to treating others like we’d want to be treated.

Melissa often gets to know clients on a deeply personal level.

She works hard to answer questions of an administrative nature, share information, and works with clients in opening files, establishing payment terms, gathering documents/materials, and preparing for court.

Melissa listens and truly empathizes with the plight of those she encounters.

Melissa was born and raised in Charlotte, NC. She graduated from Independence High School and attended Carolina’s College of Health sciences where she received a Nursing Assistant certification.

Melissa has spent time working in a Customer Service role most of her adult life and truly “loves helping people.”

When Melissa is not working, she enjoys going to church and family time. You’ll find her camping with her husband “JB” and their four children every time she gets a chance.

★★★★★
I am so fortunate to have had Bill Powers on my case. Upon our first meeting, Bill insisted that through the emotions of anger, sadness, confusion, and betrayal that I remain resilient. He was available to answer questions with researched, logical, truthful answers throughout our two year stretch together... J.R.
★★★★★
Bill Powers and his firm were a true blessing. If anyone is contacting an attorney, it's more than likely not from a positive life experience. If there was a rating for "bedside manner" for lawyers he'd get a 10/10 for that as well. The entire staff were helpful... K.C.

Bill Powers’ staff has handled several traffic citations for me over the years, and they exceeded my expectations each and every time. Would highly recommend anyone faced with a traffic citation or court case contact his office and they will handle it from there. M.C.

Bill and his staff are flat out great. I (unfortunately) was a repeat customer after a string of tickets. These guys not only took care of the initial ticket for me, but went the extra mile and reduced my problems from 3 to just 1 (very minor one) on the same day I called back! I would recommend them to anyone. A.R.
